More information about 1977 Toward a New View of America Hans Trefousse Arthur Cole Robert A East

An especially interesting association copy of Toward a New View of America: Essays in Honor of Arthur C. Cole, edited by noted historian Hans L. Trefousse and published by Burt Franklin & Company in 1977. The scholarly collection explores American political, social, labor, and economic history and includes contributions from major historians including Eugene D. Genovese, Morton Rothstein and Melvyn Dubofsky. The book was reviewed in the Journal of American History shortly after publication. Most notably, Robert A. East contributed the essay The Strange Pause in John Adamss Diary, beginning on page 17, and this copy bears Robert A. Easts signature on the title page. That makes this much more interesting than an ordinary copy: it appears to have been East's own copy of a book in which his work was published. From the personal library of noted historian, author and professor Robert A. East (1909-2001).
